Cell Phone Lookup Establishes True Ownership
This week begins with another report of a cell phone robbery, this time at the basketball court of a California school. Apparently, the 21-year-old owner of the cell phone placed the device on the bench, and watched from the field as the 18-year-old perpetrator pocketed the phone. There was a brief chase and a skirmish, during which the owner attempted to get back his phone, and the thief punched him in the head and fled. The victim followed and watched the man get in his car and drive away, but not before his pursuer noted his license plate number and partially memorized it.
After the 21-year-old reported the incident, police detectives did a little investigating. They first ran a cell phone lookup on the victim's name and address to corroborate his story and confirm his ownership of the cell phone. The cell phone number was indeed registered under his name. Next, they looked up the partial license plate number provided by the victim in an automated license plate scanning system. Within minutes, police traced the stolen cell phone to the thief's home. After the owner fingered him as the thief, the 18-year-old was arrested, booked on suspicion of robbery and released on bail, and is due to be arraigned later this week.
One hopes the teenager has learned that hiding a stolen cell phone is pointless. With all the smart technology tools we have at our disposal today, he didn't have a chance. Between the cell phone lookups, GPS tracking systems, license plate scanning systems and many other smart tricks and gadgets, hiding from the police is an exercise in futility.
